I'm a bit undecided about my feelings about this book. I really liked the first half even though I had no idea what was going on or where this was headed (I intentionally went into it not knowing what it would be about), but the second half made me feel really bad.The ending was good again, but it felt incredibly rushed compared to the slow pace of the rest of the book. I just wanted more closure in all aspects.The writing was... unconventional. I wasn't a fan of how the narrator occasionally made comments about how this is a story told in hindsight, and how she might have acted differently had she known more at the time, but maybe not, and I'm just not a fan of that.Only now that I'm done I can see what the book is really about. This might be partly my own fault - the topics are very important and will definitely speak to a great many people, just... not to me, at the point in my life where I am right now. Maybe I read this at the wrong time.I was a bit confused about the connection of Radio Silence with the author's comic, Heartstopper. Heartstopper plays before Radio Silence, and there's certain overlap in characters, but the relationships didn't quite seem to line up. I wasn't overly bothered by this, but it made me wonder.I liked the characters a lot, especially Aled. The entire cast was interesting, and I wish there had been more in depth details about most of the side characters.Content warnings include: abusive parent, underage drinking, mental illness, online and in-person harassment including death threats.
Was mich am meisten an diesem Buch begeistert hat ist, dass die Charaktere nicht die typischen weißen heterosexuellen Teenager sind, über die es so viele Geschichten gibt. Die Mehrheit der Charaktere ist of colour und queer (bisexuell, lesbisch, schwul, asexuell/demisexuell), es gibt allein erziehende Mütter, emotionale Misshandlung (gerade dieser Teil ist nicht unbedingt was für schwache Nerven, aber sehr beeindruckend), und die Erkenntnis das nur weil alle etwas von einem erwarten, das noch lange nicht das Richtige für einen sein muss. Die zentrale Beziehung des Buches ist eine Freundschaft, und keine Liebesbeziehung, es geht um die Schwierigkeiten das zu sagen was man fühlt und die Diskrepanz zwischen Schul-Ich und Internet-Identität. Ich fand die Probleme des Erwachsen-werdens in einer Weise beschrieben, dass ich mich auch noch mit einigen Jahren Abstand in die Charaktere hineinversetzen konnte. Würde ich unbedingt weiter empfehlen, vor allem allen, die mal Teenager außerhalb des Mainstreams lesen wollen.
Radio Silence is an amazing book. I thoroughly recommend reading it. It has POC (People of Colour), LGBTQIA* representation (and an Asexual character that is not described as broken, emotionally uncapable of being in a relationship or as a person who gets changed over the vourse of the book). Furthermore this book has a great message for Teenagers and young adults - college just sometimes isn't the right path. No matter how well you do in school, it does not mean you have to study to feel validated and feel like you belong. The main message here is: "These days there are so many other options for people that just aren't suited to university - and that is perfectly okay!"Another important topic of this book is parental abuse. For people dealing with this it could be triggering, so beware! But overall it is written very well into the stroyline and depicted as something that is in no way the victims fault.I don't know what else I can say, apart from "buy this book" - it is definitely worth the read and I look forward to reading more of Alice Oseman's books.
I don't really know what to say, except that I really loved this book. The characters were so relatable to me - not only the main character Frances, but especially her friend Aled - and that makes it one of those books that feel like they become part of your identity when you read them (and reread them, hopefully!). My only regret is that it wasn't slightly longer. I know it's already a pretty long book, but the ending still felt a bit rushed to me and I would have like seeing some issues resolved over a longer time period (I'm trying really hard not to write spoilers!)
